Susan Knox is a CPA, ret., financial planner, and has a long association with higher education. She taught accounting at Franklin University and was an administrator at The Ohio State University, serving as director of Internal Auditing, assistant to the provost, and associate university treasurer.

As associate university treasurer, she had responsibility for student aid accounting, student loans collections, fees and deposits, systems development, cash management, and short-term investments. As assistant to the provost, she had budgetary responsibility for the eighteen colleges of the University.

She left Ohio State to start her CPA firm specializing in personal financial planning and taxes. She earned a Certificate in Educational Achievement for Personal Financial Planning from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Her clients frequently characterized her as a careful listener, nonjudgmental observer, and teacher. She believes those qualities translate into the tone of Financial Basics.

After Susan and her husband moved to Seattle, she was consulted by a private student loan agency whose staff was concerned about students borrowing money without having much financial experience. They wanted to talk with a financial planner about how they could help their student borrowers become more informed. After hearing about problems their borrowers had encountered, she thought if she could write a book that would reach students before they begin to make significant financial decisions and give them simple, common-sense information about money, it might prevent students from making mistakes that could haunt them for the rest of their lives. She hopes that Financial Basics will put students on the path to making smart financial decisions and to becoming masters of their financial lives.

“Financial Basics: A Money-Management Guide for Students by Susan Knox is an engaging and insightful primer aimed to help young people learn to manage their finances.  This book will give practical advice to help the reader avoid many of the common problems encountered by young people who, for the first time in their lives, are responsible for managing their income and expenses.  Financial education is sorely missing in our culture. Many parents have poor money management skills.  I think that Financial Basics should be a standard part of a college’s new student orientation program.   Financial difficulties is a significant cause of students dropping out of college. Susan Knox’s book will help colleges retain students by providing the basic tools needed to effectively manage one’s finances.”
